'What always happens.. life,' he said with a long sigh. He saw it time and time again, no matter where he was or what year, life always seemed to go out of it's way to tear his loved ones away from him.
'She died..' he continued slowly, turning away when he felt an uncontrollable tear run down his cheek. It had been a long time since he'd talked about her and no matter how much time passed it never got any easier. 'I take solace in the fact that she lived a long and happy life,' he said, smiling through the pain. Sure, he could have turned her at any point in the 40 years they had known each other. After all, she was one of the few mortals who knew of his lineage and despite her devotion to him, he couldn't allow her to become a monster like him. She was the one light in his dark world and the last thing he wanted for her was to see that light slowly die. Stuck in a never-ending life, forced to hide in the shadows and tear people apart like an animal. He loved her too much for her to end up that way.
'But it all happened a long time ago,' he said, turning back to her with a more cheerful smile, 'I loved her until the end and even now, I know she will always have a place in my heart. Just like your love will always have a place in yours, no matter what life has in store for the both of you.'
Alice listened to him tell his story with silent fascination. She had heard he was a vampire and it seemed like this was indeed the case. When he spoke of the woman he had loved, she could tell he had really loved her. It was evident in not only his expression but his tone, that was something that no one could really fake. "Wow....that's really romantic." Alice said gently when he had finished. "Thomas and I....we..we were together for three years. I've known him my whole life though and I know I'll always love him. What you've said, it gives me some hope. Even if I never see him again, maybe I can love again." She said quietly. Her eyes landed on him again and she reached for his hand, "Thanks for listening, I almost forgot how nice it was to have someone...do that." She said, she had almost said care. And while she hoped for that, she didn't want to voice it not yet anyway.
When she finally spoke he let out a small sigh of relief, it was over and he hadn't completely broken down this time.
'Romantic is one way of putting it,' he said laughing softly. He'd never much associated himself with that word, maybe because any romantic feelings he did have died long ago with her, 'all I know is it would have been selfish of me to do anything else.'
He watched her as she spoke, no matter how long Mistress Grey kept her here, he hoped for her sake that her love was still waiting. If his love was anything like hers then he had a feeling he would be.
'Just remember that it isn't the years that you spent together that count, but the connection you shared during that time that matters most,' he stared at her for a while as a morbid thought entered his mind, 'if all else fails, at least you'll be able to meet him in the afterlife,' he said quietly. If only he was able to do the same.
Alice thought of Thomas and then thought about the fact that she might never seem him again, the idea was horrible. To be stuck here until she'd die but she had a feeling that Jean would make sure none of them would be able to leave...not easily anyway. Would Thomas wait for her? Or would he meet someone new? Was it selfish of her to want him to wait? All those questions she wasn't sure how to answer nor did she want to think of the outcome, not yet anyway. "I guess you're right...I don't want to be the reason to make someone want to stay single forever though." She said eventually as she raised her gaze to meet his own. "Or at least not until they die....Thomas deserves someone who he can actually be with. Someone who can be with him in public and not be harassed for it." Alice said her fingers twining in her short skirt causing the fabric to bunch up a little. "Or maybe I'm just over thinking it." She stated as she looked down at her basket absently.
Drake could tell that there were many things occupying her mind in that moment. He almost put his hand on her shoulder to comfort her before she finally spoke.
He thought about it for a moment, 'maybe you're right. Then again you don't know what he is thinking right now, maybe he doesn't want anyone else if he can't have you.'
He watched her sullen expression and lifted her chin with one finger. 'How about this..' he started, 'if you're not free of this place before I move on to the next country. Then I'll do everything in my power to set you free so you can be with your beloved again.' He gazed into her eyes, a grin spreading across his face, 'and if I get caught for helping you then she'll either kill me, which would mean nothing to me. Or subject me to years upon years of torture which, let's face it, will go by in the blink of an eye for me.'
Alice stared at him in shock, "You would do that for me?" She asked with her voice catching just a little bit. It was almost too overwhelming for Alice to comprehend that someone would go to that much effort for her. "I don't want you to risk your life for me Drake, as much as I want to see Thomas again...I don't want you to get hurt or killed." She said after a moment. It was hard to say as much but it was the truth, she could tell Drake was being honest and that was both touching and scary for her to hear. Jean would be livid if she ever found out that Drake was even considering helping her escape and she knew Drake would suffer long before Jean killed him and Alice didn't want that to happen.
Drake couldn't help but laugh at her reaction, 'I apologise if my proposition was too forward. I forget that great acts of chivalry aren't as commonplace as they used to be,' he said, scratching at the back of his head nervously, 'helping damsels in distress is a thing I've always done and a thing I'm quite good at.' However he understood her worry and realised it might take some time before his offer fully hit her, 'if you ever change your mind, just let me know. I'll be around for a while yet.'
Alice blushed, it was true she had grown used to people not going out of their way for the workers here. "It's not that I don't believe you, it's just as you said I've grown used to being ignored here." She said eventually. "I want to leave, I really do but the risk is very high and I don't want you to get hurt." Alice said slowly as she tried to explain herself. "If things here ever get to be too hard to handle...I will take you up on your offer." She said eventually. Alice turned to look up at him, "Thank you, it means a lot to me." She said sincerely, meaning what she said.
'Very well,' he said with a smile, 'I'll keep a secret escape plan up my sleeve until that day.' Drake knew he'd keep coming to the asylum for a long time yet, there were plenty of women and men he hadn't met and even though he was somewhat of a gentlemen, he had needs like any other man, mortal or not.
He stared down at her basket, realising that he'd prevented her from doing whatever job Mistress Grey had told her to do.
'I apologise for keeping you from your work,' he said as he glanced at the plants around them, 'allow me to help you catch up on the work load you missed. It would be wrong of me to leave you to get into trouble because I distracted you.'
