Alice gathered more plants and put them in the basket that she had been given, today she had been given the chore of gathering medicinal plants and herbs from the garden. It was one of the more relaxing jobs that the workers were forced to do. At least she didn't have to worry about any of the clients finding her here, as far as she knew they didn't usually venture farther then the private rooms. However Alice would keep her guard up as she had been trained by her dad and Thomas....she swallowed hard and shook her head before she went back to work. She would find her family, she would...or they'd find her she knew that in her heart but sometimes it got really hard to believe. Especially since it had been so long since she had seen them, at least four years but she had to have hope that they would be reunited.
Drake floated into the gardens, his disembodied form came in handy when he wanted to explore parts of the building that most other clients were not privy to. However he made sure not to go anywhere too out of bounds due to the volatile nature of, who he liked to call, the mistress of the house. He had arrived a few hours earlier, taking in the many beauties that resided here. The most beautiful of all was standing before him now. They hadn't known each other for long, but she had soon become a fast favourite of his.
'It is quite beautiful in here, isn't it?' he said, morphing from mist to flesh in a matter of seconds as he gazed at the woman before him, a small smile playing on his lips.
Alice looked up startled when she heard someone behind her and almost dropped her basket, thankfully however she managed to recover herself. "Do you always sneak up on people like that?" She demanded as she set her basket down carefully. It was hard to look at him...he reminded her so much of well her twin and it was more then a little eerie. However she also knew that Jean would have her head if she so much as disrespected any of the clients, she made a face. "I suppose it is...better then the rest of the place." She admitted reluctantly.
He chuckled softly at her surprise, 'I apologise m'lady, I'm afraid it has become a force of habit over the years.' Ever since he was a child his mother had taught him to never allow anyone to catch him off guard, to always be the last to show your hand and the first to figure out your opponent, or in this case the company he kept. It was something he doubted he could stop doing even if he tried.
'That it is..' he stared at her for a moment before reaching out and gripping a plant leaf between his fingers, 'I can't imagine Mistress Grey has anyone working in here for too long..' he pulled the leaf from the stem and held it in the palm of his hand, 'one could conjure up some rather dangerous thoughts, out here all alone..'
Quite without her realizing it, a small smile appeared at his words. For a client he definitely had good manners. Alice bit down on her lip as he took one of the leaves and spread it on his palm. She rolled her eyes, "Oh really? Such as?" She asked as she reached for the plant in his grasp. Oddly enough she was feeling relaxed and not as tense as she had earlier. It might have been because she was away from Jean Grey or it could have been the company. "I thought clients weren't allowed in until night time." She added with a raised eyebrow.
'It all depends on how dangerous you want to be,' he said slyly, 'the only trick then is to not allow Mistress Grey to get wind of it.'
Drake brushed his fingers against hers as she reached for the plant in his hand, 'to those who know discretion and subtlety, this place is open all hours of the day..' he disappeared in a wisp of precipitation, reappearing behind her a moment later with ease. 'You just have to find a way to travel beyond the reaches of human sight,' he said as he reached around and gently covered her eyes with his hands, 'and if I just so happen to bump into Mistress Grey during my travels..' he said calmly as he released his hands from her face, 'she'll find there is little she could do to me that hasn't already been done..' He leaned in slowly and whispered in her ear, 'besides, the thrill of getting caught makes one feel quite alive, does it not?'
Alice thought about what he said and then rolled her eyes, "I'm not really someone who lives dangerously." She said carefully, a total lie after all danger was part of what she had done for a living before all this. Alice had a sneaking suspicion however that his idea was much different then her own, she shivered just a little bit as his hand grazed her own. She blinked in surprise when he suddenly disappeared, and jumped when she felt him right behind her. He had his hands covering her eyes and Alice wasn't really paying as much attention to his words then as she wondered wildly what he had in mind for her. Alice slowly breathed out in some relief when his hands fell away from her face, her heart hammering as he leaned in and whispered in her ear. "Yes." She said quietly, his words making her remember other times, with another person...her face turned a bright red at the memories that came to her then.
Drake smiled as he felt the heat coming from her cheeks. No matter how long he lived, he never got tired of seeing the blood rush to a woman's face. When the crimson hue flushed their soft skin.. it was like nothing a mere human could ever understand.
He cupped her chin in his hand, gently pulling her face towards his, 'anyone could find us here.. alone.. so close,' he whispered softly, 'I can only imagine what would happen if we were caught.' Drake closed the gap between them, he could hear the blood pumping through her veins and it took all of his self control not to take her where she stood.
Alice almost leaned forward but then...Thomas's face appeared in her mind's eye and she pulled away. It wasn't fair, why did he have to look so much like him? She ran a trembling hand down her face and let out a sigh. Her hands were shaking, "Why? Why do you torment me like this?" She asked as she turned to look at Drake with tears shining in her eyes. Her eyes burned and she fought to keep the tears at bay, "You look like-" She broke off and tried to calm herself down. Another breath and Alice felt more at ease, "Like someone I used to know." She said quietly. The memory of Thomas seared into her brain, the only one in her family that she missed the most.
Drake was taken by surprise at her reaction, taking a slight step back as she turned to face him.
'Oh pet, I meant no harm,' he said softly, gazing at her with a pained expression as her eyes glistened with tears. Over the years he'd made it his mission to never draw blood from someone who didn't want to give it. In that moment he was more glad than ever that his mother had taught him how to control his bloodlust, nowadays it was more of a want than a need.
'Then they must have been incredibly handsome,' he joked, laughing lowly. He placed a hand on her head and ruffled her hair as his tone became more serious, 'was this someone akin to your soul mate?'
Alice wiped at her eyes, realizing that she had over reacted and mentally cursed she really hadn't meant too but it was so hard. She glanced up at him and sighed "I'm sorry I over reacted." She apologized and meaning it. He was one of the only nice clients she had met here and she had lashed out at him for next to no reason really. She felt ashamed for her outburst and hoped her expression conveyed that to Drake. "He is." She said with a small smile as she thought of Thomas, "You could pass for his double in some ways." Alice added a little laugh escaping her. At his other question she bit her bottom lip, "I think so...but we couldn't be together, no matter how much we loved each other." She stated sadly. She gently shrugged his hand off her head, lightly squeezing his hand before releasing it.
'No need for apologies, it happens to the best of us,' he said with an attempt at a cheery smile. He watched her expression as she spoke of his so-called double, even to him it was obvious that she cherished him above all else. He envied that, that devotion to one person. It was just a shame that things like that always seemed to end in heartbreak.
'It sounds like he's quite lucky to have you caring after him,' he said as he squeezed her hand back before resting it at his side, 'where is he now?' he asked after a short pause, taking the chance that talking about him didn't make her feel any worse.
Alice gave him a sad smile, "Hopefully he's still home...but I wouldn't blame him if he ever decided to move on." She added after a moment. How could she expect someone to give up their daily lives when she had been here for so long anyway? She studied Drake thoughtfully, "What about you? Was there someone you loved once?" She asked gently, torn between wanting to know and hoping that she wasn't being too forward. It was odd just how comfortable she felt talking about her life with Drake...she had never felt like that here before.
'Well for your sake, I hope you get your happy ending one day,' he said, someone deserves one around here.
'Me?' he said, thinking back through all of his years on earth. Despite his countless trysts only one stuck permanently in his mind, 'there was someone, a long time ago..' He thought back to his time when he and his mother would travel the world, a time back in the early 1800's when he truly fell in love for the first time.
'I once knew a woman, a geisha from my time visiting Japan,' he started, walking towards the plants and stroking them absent-mindedly. 'We spent many months together, we taught each other about our cultures and enjoyed each others company. It wasn't long before I realised I'd fallen madly in love with her,' he smiled softly, staring wistfully down at his hands, 'I can still feel the softness of her skin, the way the dimples on her face would appear every time she smiled at one of my lame jokes..'
Realising he was lost in thought and starting to ramble, he coughed lightly and turned back to her. 'Apologies, I didn't mean to go on,' he said, laughing softly at his carelessness.
Alice looked up in surprise at that comment, "Thank you, I hope that for everyone." She admitted with a small smile. As he started speaking of the woman he had once loved, Alice felt her heart clench. He had loved her, it was very clear in the way that he spoke so lovingly about her. She wondered if he loved her still, she had heard how sometimes love lingered. "You don't have to apologize, she sounds amazing. What happened to her?" She asked after a moment. For his sake, Alice hoped that nothing terrible had happened to the woman he had loved.
